Prevention of Medical Errors

This course is designed for all Florida-licensed and certified healthcare professionals, including but not
limited to:

  • Registered Nurses (RN) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN)
  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN): Nurse Practitioners, CRNAs, CNMs, Clinical
    Nurse Specialists
  • Physical Therapists (PT) and Physical Therapist Assistants (PTA)
  • Occupational Therapists (OT) and Occupational Therapist Assistants (OTA)
  • Respiratory Therapists (RT)
  • Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP)
  • Home Health Aides (HHA) and Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA)

    Learning Objectives
    Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
  1. Define medical errors, near misses, and adverse events, and distinguish between categories of
    errors.
  2. Identify the scope, epidemiology, and financial impact of medical errors in the United States.
  3. Describe the most common types of medical errors affecting diverse healthcare settings.
  4. Recognize systemic, environmental, and human factors that contribute to medical errors.
  5. Apply evidence-based strategies to prevent medication errors, communication failures,
    diagnostic errors, and procedural errors.
  6. Explain the role of a culture of safety, just culture, and error reporting in error reduction.
  7. Utilize structured communication tools, including SBAR and I-PASS, to improve patient
    handoffs and transitions of care.
  8. Identify specific responsibilities of licensed and certified healthcare professionals in preventing
    medical errors across care settings.
  9. Understand reporting obligations and the Florida Patient Safety Act.
